The end of summer is quickly closing in us here in Michigan (major sad face). It has been a busy one here at Skintuition, as we have been waxing all summer long to get you ready for your summer vacations, pool parties, beach days, and up north weekends. In September, we usually see a slight down shift in the amount of waxing clients that we see. With Fall being right around the corner, and chillier days starting to show up, maybe waxing is the last thing that you may be thinking about! But, just because you aren’t spending your weekends by the pool anymore, that does not mean that you should stop your waxing routine. Consistent waxing every 4-6 weeks will weaken the hair significantly. You will start to notice that the hair will grow in lighter and finer, and eventually, you will see that some of it does not grow back at all. I have seen many, many people who have been waxing for years that barely have any hair growth left. If you are consistent, it will happen.
Do you want to have the smoothest skin possible? Here are our top pro tips for getting the perfect wax.
Your hair must be long enough for the wax to grab it. The minimum length is 1/4″. Don’t have a ruler handy? Another quick way to check if your hair is long enough is the pinch test. If you can pinch the hairs between 2 fingers and pull it, then it is long enough. This usually takes a minimum of 2 weeks after shaving and 3-4 weeks after waxing to be ready.
Keep your skin moisturized
Healthy, hydrated skin is going to have a better result. If your skin is very dry and flakey, the wax will adhere to it more, and can cause more irritation. If your skin is hydrated, it will help to eliminate skin lifting and hair breakage. Even if you cannot commit to moisturizing your skin everyday, please make sure that you at least moisturize for a few days prior, and the day your waxing appointment to help minimize and post waxing irritation.
Exfoliation is very important for skin health for so many reasons, especially when it comes to waxing. Regular exfoliation will help to prevent ingrown hairs. By removing the top layers of dead skin, your hairs will have an easier time breaking through if there isn’t anything in the way. We recommend using an exfoliation mitt daily to help with this. We also have an amazing ingrown hair product called PFB that uses salicylic acid to treat and prevent ingrown hairs. Using both exfoliation methods together will produce the best results.
Keep the area clean
It is best to avoid extreme sweating the day of your waxing appointment. Try to do your workout before you get waxed that day. Perspiration can cause irritation in the area, so it is best to avoid it. Wear breathable cotton underwear, and avoid lace or any scratchy fabrics in the area. If you are waxing your underarms, avoid putting deodorant on right after your appointment, to allow the skin to breathe. Just clean the area with a mild soap and put a light moisturizer on, if needed.
If you wax every 4-6 weeks, you will see the best results! Its really important to get out of the habit of shaving, and just get used to waxing. Shaving between the appointments is counterproductive when you are trying to thin the hair out. So, just let it grow! Set up a standing appointment every 4-6 weeks so that you have it on your calendar, and you don’t forget when you have to come back.
